Small Business Owner. Those are 3 little words that I NEVER thought I would ever use to describe myself. I still struggle with them and I’ve had the title for almost 6 months. I’m not sure how much longer it will take for me to get comfortable and confident with it but it’s a badge that I don’t take lightly. It’s a privilege just as much as it is earned. Ever since I started my Instagram account (formerly Home.Sweeter.Home) 2 years ago, I have poured my heart and soul into this brand. Whether it is documenting DIY home renovations, scouring the shelves at thrift stores and antique markets, learning the ins and outs of building a website or staying up late at night to do research… my life has evolved into a never-ending cycle of everything Copper & Gold Project. And I’m not mad about it one bit! This little passion project of mine has brought me so much joy and sense of “purpose” over the past couple of years. And I can already sense that it’s only the beginning. That my life is going to evolve and flex to make room for more of this. And I welcome it.
When I registered for a business number in January of 2020 I felt an exhilarating rush of excitement, followed shortly by an overwhelming sense of anxiety and pressure. “Okay, so now you have a silly little number from the government. What’s next? What are you going to do with it? What is your business model? Who is your target audience? How are you going to learn all of the ins and outs of running a business? WHAT EVEN IS YOUR BUSINESS?” My mind was filled with ideas but I didn’t have the systems in place to do anything with them.
Fast forward 7 months. After numerous chats with my entrepreneur friends, enrollment in a Side Hustle online course, countless hours playing around with the backend of building a website, a ridiculous amount of money in branding and shipping materials and too many sleepless nights to count… I finally felt like I was in a place to take the leap. Was everything perfect? Fuck no. But it was as ready as it was going to be and if I didn’t launch my business then, I knew I never would. Because I convinced myself that PROGRESS was so much more important than the ever so elusive “perfection”.
So on July 17th 2020 at 12pm right after getting a facial and sitting outside (#COVID) at a Starbucks drinking my favourite iced drink… I pressed LIVE. At 11:59am my heart was racing but at 12:01pm all of my nerves dissipated. I watched the live analytics as someone would log onto my website…and then another… and then another. And as market item after market item got scooped up, my “validation” bucket kept getting fuller and fuller. My hard work was being SEEN and experienced by many of those who followed along in my journey to prepare for it. And I couldn’t do anything but sit there and smile. It was the joy I needed and was searching for and it proved that all of my hard work was worth it.
I have now been in “business” for over 5 months and it’s safe to say that this is only the beginning. I am extremely proud of how far the CGP Market has come so far. Between the 32 wicker basket sets, 15 refinished furniture pieces and 469 other knick knacks, I am still in disbelief that 217 orders have come through my little online Market. But this is just the beginning! I have learned SO much over those short few months and know that there is still so much to test, evaluate, change and grow. I already have a running list of ideas on what I can add, change or remove from my current business model to start molding CGP into what it’s truly meant to be.
So what’s next for CGP? Well you can definitely expect more of the same from my online Market again this year! Combination of both pre-loved and vintage home décor pieces has been a staple of my business and will continue to be so. I am dabbling with the idea of also adding some consistent home décor pieces sourced from other small businesses to provide a bit more consistency to my inventory. In addition, I hope to expand my services in furniture refinishing projects and design consultations. Just like my initial launch, these elements of growth will take time to test, plan and get prepared. But I am very excited about how they can all come together and add another layer to what CGP can offer.
Until then, thank you for your continued support! Whether that’s by placing an order on the Market, following along with my Instagram shenanigans, sending me adorable DMs about how you finally tackled a project because you felt inspired by mine or perhaps just an observer watching and cheering on from afar… I appreciate you. More than you know.
Thank you for making this “Small Business Owner” smile and wake up each and every day excited to see what’s next <3
